Building the future of smart building access, one buzzer at a time.

Welcome to the Knockli Blog
Missed another package because you couldn't answer the buzzer? You're not alone. Every day, millions of apartment residents face the same frustrating choice: interrupt what you're doing to answer the intercom, or risk having your delivery sent back to the warehouse.
We launched this blog to help you solve that problem and many others like it. Whether you're an apartment resident tired of missed deliveries, a property manager looking to modernize your portfolio without expensive hardware upgrades, or an office professional seeking better visitor management, we've built this space for you.
The way we interact with our buildings is changing. According to the National Apartment Association, apartment residents receive an average of 8-10 packages per month, a number that's grown significantly with the rise of e-commerce. Meanwhile, building intercoms and buzzer systems haven't evolved much since they were first installed decades ago. That disconnect creates real problems: missed deliveries, constant interruptions, and security concerns that affect daily life.
At Knockli, we believe there's a better way. And this blog is where we'll share what we've learned about making buildings work smarter for the people who live and work in them.
The Problem We're Solving
If you've ever lived in an apartment with a buzzer, you know the frustration. The delivery driver buzzes at 2 PM when you're in a meeting. You miss the call, and now your package is headed back to the warehouse. Or worse, someone buzzes claiming to be a delivery driver, and you're not quite sure whether to let them in.
Knockli is an AI-powered virtual doorman that answers your building's buzzer, screens visitors, and unlocks the door when your rules allow. It works with any phone-based intercom system (the same system your building already has) without requiring any new hardware or installation.
Here's how it works: When someone buzzes your unit, your building's intercom calls a phone number. With Knockli, that number is your Knockli line instead of your personal phone. Our AI answers the call, has a natural conversation with the visitor to understand who they are and why they're there, and then takes action based on rules you've set. Need to let in a delivery? Knockli can give them instructions on where to leave packages. Expecting a friend? Add them to your allowlist for automatic entry.
The key innovation is that Knockli requires no hardware changes. Your building's buzzer already works by calling a phone number and unlocking when it receives specific keypad tones (called DTMF tones). Knockli simply becomes the intelligent layer that decides when to send those tones, and when not to.
In short: Knockli is a software-only AI doorman that transforms any phone-based intercom into a smart building access system. Setup takes about 10 minutes, costs $19/month, and requires zero hardware installation.
What You'll Find on This Blog
Our content is organized into three main categories, each designed for a specific audience with unique challenges and goals:
Smart Living (For Residents)
Living in an apartment comes with unique challenges and opportunities. Modern apartment technology can make a real difference in daily life, but only if you know how to use it effectively. In this category, we'll share:
Delivery Management Tips
- How to never miss a package again, even when you're not home
- Setting up delivery instructions that actually get followed
- Managing multiple delivery services (Amazon, FedEx, UPS, DoorDash) through a single system
- Understanding your rights when packages go missing
Security Best Practices
- Balancing convenience with safety when granting building access
- Red flags to watch for when someone buzzes your apartment
- How to verify visitor identities without being at the door
- Privacy considerations for smart building technology
Smart Home Integration
- Making the most of technology in rental spaces (where you can't modify wiring)
- Connecting your building's buzzer to your smart home ecosystem
- Automation ideas that work even without landlord approval
Property Insights (For Property Managers)
Managing buildings means constantly balancing resident satisfaction, operational efficiency, and technology investments. Property managers face a unique challenge: buildings with aging infrastructure that residents expect to work seamlessly. According to NMHC research, over 70% of renters say smart building amenities influence their decision to lease.
In this category, we'll cover:
Modernization Strategies
The biggest barrier to smart building technology isn't cost; it's the assumption that you need to replace existing hardware. Modern software-first solutions like AI-powered intercoms work with legacy systems, not against them.
- Upgrading legacy intercom systems without expensive hardware replacements
- Phased approaches to building technology that spread costs over time
- Understanding what "no hardware required" actually means for implementation
- Case studies of buildings that modernized without major capital expenditure
Resident Satisfaction
- What amenities residents actually want (spoiler: package management is near the top)
- Reducing complaints related to missed deliveries and building access
- Creating policies that balance security with convenience
- Communication strategies for rolling out new building technology
PropTech Trends
- Understanding the difference between hardware-heavy and software-first solutions
- Evaluating virtual doorman services and AI-powered building access
- Integration considerations with existing property management systems
- ROI calculations for building technology investments
Compliance and Security
- Best practices for access logging and audit trails
- Privacy considerations when implementing AI-powered systems
- Liability questions around automated door access
- Emergency access protocols and override procedures
Workplace Solutions (For Office Managers)
Running an office without dedicated reception staff presents unique challenges. Visitors need to feel welcomed, but you can't always have someone stationed at the front desk. The International Facility Management Association notes that reception staffing is one of the most common areas where organizations seek efficiency gains.
Our content for office professionals includes:
Virtual Reception Options
- Alternatives to full-time front desk staff
- AI-powered visitor screening that maintains professionalism
- Creating a welcoming first impression without physical reception
Visitor Management
- Professional greeting protocols without dedicated staff
- Pre-registration systems that streamline check-in
- Handling unexpected visitors gracefully
After-Hours Access
- Managing building entry around the clock
- Rules-based access for employees and contractors
- Emergency protocols when no staff is present
Security and Compliance
- Logging and audit trail requirements for commercial spaces
- Integration with existing security systems
- Compliance considerations for different industries
Why We're Writing This
At Knockli, we believe that smart building access shouldn't require expensive hardware replacements or complex installations. Our AI-powered virtual doorman works with the phone-based intercom systems that already exist in millions of buildings across the United States.
But beyond our product, we want to contribute to the broader conversation about how buildings can work better for the people who live and work in them. Technology should make life easier, not more complicated. And too often, "smart building" solutions require significant infrastructure changes that most buildings simply can't support.
That's why we're committed to education. Not everyone needs Knockli specifically, but everyone dealing with building access challenges deserves to understand their options. Through this blog, we'll share:
- Honest assessments of different approaches to building access modernization
- Practical tips that work regardless of what technology you use
- Industry insights that help you make informed decisions
- Real stories from residents and property managers navigating these challenges
What Makes Knockli Different
While this blog will cover building access broadly, we should explain what makes our approach unique:
-
No hardware required: Knockli works with your building's existing phone-based intercom. If your buzzer calls a phone number when someone presses your unit, Knockli can work with it.
-
AI-powered conversations: Unlike simple call forwarding or voicemail systems, Knockli has natural conversations with visitors to understand who they are and what they need.
-
Rules-based access: You define the rules. Want to let delivery drivers in during business hours but not at night? Want to auto-unlock for people on your allowlist? The control is yours.
-
Privacy-first design: We don't store conversation recordings longer than necessary, and you control what information is collected and retained.
-
Affordable pricing: At $19/month per unit (household included), Knockli is accessible to individual residents, not just buildings with big technology budgets.
What's Coming Next
In the weeks and months ahead, we'll be publishing:
- Deep dives into common apartment living challenges and practical solutions
- Guides for property managers evaluating building technology options
- Case studies showing how buildings have modernized their access systems
- Tips and tricks for getting the most out of your building's existing infrastructure
- Industry analysis on PropTech trends and where building access is headed
- How-to content for setting up and optimizing smart building features
We're also planning to feature guest contributors from the property management industry, resident advocates, and technology experts who can bring diverse perspectives to these topics.
